Five-year-old girl raped, left unconscious outside hospital

Five-year-old girl raped, left unconscious outside hospital

LAHORE: Another incident of cruelty shocked the nation when some unidentified persons raped a five-year-old girl and threw her outside a teaching hospital in the wee hours on Friday.

A watchman who found the girl unconscious with blood stains on her clothes moved her to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Doctors at the hospital examined her and confirmed that she had been ‘raped’ repeatedly for more than an hour.
They said her condition suggested that her tormentors were more than one.
Daughter of a Wapda employee, the girl was playing with her three-year-old cousin outside her Ghosia Colony, Mughalpura, residence on Thursday evening when she went missing. At about 7pm it was realised that the two had gone missing.
The kidnapper(s) threw the girl on the green belt outside the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and the boy near the Services Hospital.
A traffic warden who found the boy weeping outside the Services Hospital took him to the office of a private TV channel and then to the Child Protection Bureau.
Doctors at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital immediately referred the girl to the Services Hospital for surgical intervention due to some medical conditions of a serious nature she had developed during the ‘forced rape’.
Parents remained unaware about the whereabouts of their children for many hours. They came to know about the actual picture from TV channels which gave prominent coverage to the unfortunate incident on Friday morning.
Services Hospital doctors performed two minor procedures and moved the girl to the intensive care unit (ICU).
A doctor told Dawn that the little girl was facing a serious medical complication called ‘vaginal haemorrhage’.
He said the girl was unable to pass stool and urine and he suspected that she might have been raped from both sides.
He also said that she might develop fertility issues in future. However, it would be premature to give any final decision as the patient was undergoing treatment, he added.
The doctor said the girl had undergone a laparotomy procedure under general anaesthesia and was still in critical condition.
“We rushed to the neighbours and in the locality when both children did not come home after an hour or so,” the father of the ill-fated girl told Dawn.
He said he made announcements through mosques and visited three police stations, but could not find the children.
“My daughter is the youngest of my 10 children and what has happened to her is beyond comprehension for me and my family,” he said in a trembling tone.
He called upon Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to “publicly hang the criminals on the very spot where they committed this inhuman act”.
The Mughalpura police have lodged a case under sections 363 and 753 of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified suspects, with no arrest so far.
The chief minister took serious note of the incident and directed police to arrest the culprits.
Lahore DIG (operations) Tahir Rai told Dawn late on Friday that no arrest had so far been made in the sexual assault case. He, however, added that police were using all resources to apprehend the culprits.
Sources said that police had taken into custody some suspects from the locality from where the girl was kidnapped.
CJ NOTICE: Taking note of the assault, the Chief Justice of Pakistan has sought a report from the chief of Punjab police.

More fresh fruit deters diabetes; juice boosts risk

PARIS: Eating more whole fresh fruit, especially blueberries, grapes, apples and pears, is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, but drinking more fruit juice has the opposite effect, says a study.

British, US and Singaporean researchers pored over data from three big health investigations that took place in the United States, spanning a quarter of a century in all.

More than 187,000 nurses and other professional caregivers were enrolled. Their health was monitored over the following years, and they regularly answered questionnaires on their eating habits, weight, smoking, physical activity and other pointers to lifestyle.

Around 6.5 percent of the volunteers developed diabetes during the studies. People who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits, especially blueberries, grapes and apples, reduced their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent compared to those who ate less than one serving per month.

"Our findings provide novel evidence suggesting certain fruits may be especially beneficial for lower diabetes risk," said Qi Sun, an assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.

On the other hand, those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day saw their risk of the disease increase by as much as 21 percent.

Swapping three servings of juice per week for whole fruits resulted in a seven-percent reduction in risk, although there was no such difference with strawberries and cantaloupe melon. The paper, published on Friday by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), says further work is needed to explore this "significant" difference.

It speculates that, even if the nutritional values of whole fruit and fruit juice are similar, the difference lies with the fact that one food is a semi-solid and the other a liquid.
"Fluids pass through the stomach to the intestine more rapidly than solids even if nutritional content is similar," says the paper.

"For example, fruit juices lead to more rapid and larger changes in serum [blood] levels of glucose and insulin than whole fruits."

The study also points to evidence that some kinds of fruit have a beneficial effect for health.
Berries and grapes, for instance, have compounds called anthocyanins which have been found to lower the risk of heart attacks.

But, say the authors, how or even whether this also applies to diabetes risks is for now unclear.
The investigation looked at data from the Nurses' Health Study, which ran from 1984-2008; the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009); and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2008).

Ten kinds of fruit were used in the questionnaire: grapes or raisins; peach, plums or apricots; prunes; bananas; cantaloupe melon; apples or pears; oranges; grapefruit; strawberries; and blueberries.

The fruit juices identified in the questionnaire were apple, orange, grapefruit and "other."

Healthy Weight Loss & Dieting Tips

Healthy Weight Loss & Dieting Tips

In our eat-and-run, massive-portion-sized culture, maintaining a healthy weight can be tough—and losing weight, even tougher. If you’ve tried and failed to lose weight before, you may believe that diets don’t work for you. You’re probably right: traditional diets don’t work—at least not in the long term. However, there are plenty of small but powerful ways to avoid common dieting pitfalls, achieve lasting weight loss success, and develop a healthier relationship with food.

The key to successful, healthy weight loss

Your weight is a balancing act, but the equation is simple: If you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight. And if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you lose weight.

Since 3,500 calories equals about one pound of fat, if you cut 500 calories from your typical diet each day, you'll lose approximately one pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories). Simple, right? Then why is weight loss so hard?

All too often, we make weight loss much more difficult than it needs to be with extreme diets that leave us cranky and starving, unhealthy lifestyle choices that undermine our dieting efforts, and emotional eating habits that stop us before we get started. But there’s a better way! You can lose weight without feeling miserable. By making smart choices every day, you can develop new eating habits and preferences that will leave you feeling satisfied—and winning the battle of the bulge.

African fish is fastest-maturing vertebrate

African fish is fastest-maturing vertebrate

Male Nothobranchius kadleci can go from eggs to fathers in one month

Tiny fish that live in temporary puddles in Africa reach sexual maturity faster than any other animal with a backbone, say scientists.
One of the studied species of killifish - Nothobranchius kadleci - started to reproduce at the age of 17 days.
Researchers found that some eggs reached hatching stage in 15 days meaning they also have the shortest minimum generation time in vertebrates.
The results are published in the open access journal EvoDevo.
Dr Martin Reichard and colleagues from the Institute of Vertebrate Biology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic studied the aging processes of two species of wild-caught fishes from southern Mozambique under laboratory conditions.
In the wild, these fishes live in extreme conditions of temporary pools that only occur during the rainy season when savannah depressions are filled with water.
"It is biologically very relevant for these fish to be able to sexually mature very fast because their habitat may dry out in three to four weeks," Dr Reichard said.
"If they mature very fast, they can produce a new generation."
The team were "really surprised" to discover it only took 17 and 18 days for the two species being studied - Nothobranchius kadleci and N. furzeri - to become sexually mature.
Previous estimates for these fishes had been in the region of four weeks but these were observations of captive-bred populations.
All four study populations also demonstrated rapid growth rates, with one group growing nearly a quarter of their total body length per day.
"I'm pretty sure if conditions are good, they would be able to sexually mature even faster in the wild," Dr Reichard told BBC Nature.
"If conditions are inferior - food is less abundant, there is a high density of fish - it would take them longer but they can still complete their lifecycle."
Explosive growth, early sexual maturation and high reproductive investment are traits typical of extremophiles - organisms inhabiting temporary and unpredictable habitats.
But being able to develop quickly is only one of the survival strategies these fish use in the changing conditions of the seasonal pools in which they live.
During the dry season, they remain in the soil as dormant eggs and embryos, waiting for the next rains which could be more than a year away, in order to hatch and then repeat the lifecycle.
"Having some embryos that develop over a year or longer means that if there is a dry year with no rain, there would still be some embryos that hatch and the population would survive," said Dr Reichard.
"It's very important to have this bet-hedging strategy."
